History of Mental Health

These are images from text books for nurses and doctors published around the late 1900s and the early 20th century, showing how people looked was considered to be most important in 'diagnosis'. It also shows 'cure by water', still advocated and used around the mid 20th century, according to the picture from 'Hints to Probationer Nurses' published in 1939. At Wirral Mind, the Training Manager, Bob Knowles runs a day course from time to time on the History of Mental Health, giving information and insights on how people with emotional and mental distresses have been 'treated'
- often abused and neglected in the past.
